Gilbert was a farming community until very recently when it grew from 5717 inhabitants in 1980 to 208,453 in 2010. It is now the most populous incorporated town in the US. The town includes 76 square miles (197 km3) of previously agricultural land which has been converted to cookie cutter housing communities. This picture represents the original town which was founded in the early 1900’s. It is visible that downtown Gilbert includes new buildings as well as the original 1900 structures. The layout of this small city center encourages pedestrian and biking use as well as automobile traffic which is abnormal for the Phoenix metro area. This can be seen in the picture with wide sidewalks and bikes parked next the restaurant. However, buses run minimally and there is no passenger rail system. The surrounding suburbs have very few social attractions so there is constant congestion in an area of about a half mile.
