Panepistimiou Street is a major street in Athens that runs one way for non-transit vehicles since 2002 from Amalias Avenue, Syntagma Square and Vassilissis Sofias Avenue to Omonoia Square in which is now a pedestrian crossing and before an intersection. Its total length is about 1.2 km. The visible information is the traffic and the number of cars but also pedestrians walking sideways. The building of the National Library of Greece and the building of the Greek Academy also exist in this picture. We can also see the elecrtical fibers that are hanging up in the air, used by trolley buses. Finally a visible information is the apparently good weather and the blue mediterranean sky which is a dominating element of this photo. First and foremost, the invisible information of this picture is the air caused by cars and motorcycles.Measures have been applied in order to reduct this effect, but the problem still exists.Another invisible information is the sound pollution of the cars and generally the traffic congestion. One solution to both invisible information/problems is the recreation of Panepistimiou street in a pedestrian, car-free place.Plans are being made for transforming the street into a pedestrian zone, a place more cultural, cosmopolitan and leisure-related. The idea is part of a project held by the Onassis Foundation under the name "Rethink Athens". Traffic congestion will also increase in all surrounding roads as it will be diverted from Panepistimiou, which will also be closed to buses except a tramline, for pedestrian use.
