FC-01x Future Cities (1st Run) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"

Visible information: there is a great amount of cars and especially vans parked in the middle of the street, even on restricted zones and on top of green areas. Also, there is a great flow of pedestrians. There are big chains, like supermarkets and banks, as well as small family own businesses, like small restaurants and hardware stores, which coexist in a very small area. There is also one of the few remaining payphones in the area. Invisible information: from the amount of cars and expensive vans, we can understand that the people who live in San Isidro, need to come to this area to fulfil different needs, like grocery shopping or going to the bank. The congregate here because there is no other cluster of business near by. This has generated the need for a person to work in this block helping people to park, and even protecting their interests when the local police want to give tickets. On the other hand, there is also a very different flow of pedestrians who come to this place. It is mostly the people who work as domestic help in the houses near by or have odd jobs in the area. They come to the small business and have a different activity and behaviour in this same area. This is why there is a payphone remaining, not for the people who reside here, but for the people who work here. This information can became knowledge and can help us plan a more liveable city because it allows us to understand the different conflicts and interests in this centre of activities. For instance, there is an important conflict in the amount of people who want to park their cars and the space available. This has generated the need for a person to come and try to sort the cars around, earning a small livelihood. With this knowledge we understand that something needs to change in this area to accommodate the people who come for the big businesses without having to invade the public area and the streets. This has to be thought in urban terms as well as in the small scale. In terms of the pedestrians that attend this area, we can see that there needs to be an improvement in the urban quality in order to take their needs into account and not be overrun by the intense car flow. That is the case, for example, for a place to sit, bigger sidewalks, and even an area where dogs can be left when their caretakers are in the stores. ![San Isidro Lima][1] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14337310609018299.jpg
