![Chalkis public market][1] The market is deserted because of many reasons. One of them is that the mayors of the city would like to have a modern mall in that place. And so no repairs, no money and no care are the only reality for the old market. There is a big danger of demolition of the hole place. Allthough the public market of Chalkis is unic and there is architectural and historic value in it. It was made in two periods: In 1885 the south part (neoclassical) and in 1936 the north side (bauhaus). In this way, on the same place, two different stories of the european architecture are been told. On the same time two different ways of thinking and understanding of the greek society are been told. The marriage in the case of this public market was successful. This is one of the first modern buildings in Chalkis. Perhaps the very first. It was a try of modernization for the city. And in some ways it was a time of modernization for Greece and the methods and shapes of the buildings in greek cities. Unfortunately the modern of that era became the problem of the future. Cement and blocs of flats became dominant in greek cities and the one and only road of financial development for the building industry. And the building industry was the main factor of the greek economy for the second part of the 20th century. The fresh ideas of the 30’s are the trap for the life of today. Because blocs of flats and roads of the same size as in the medieval times (this is the exact case of Chalkis, but it is almost universal for the rest of the country), big appartment buildings without free space –private or public- make things dificult and in some cases unhuman. The other hidden idea is that this market, after 130 years of living, faces the probability of its death. And this death is caused because of the market: the new globalized ideal of the market and the markets inside and around the cities. It is wide believed that malls and super-markets etc are the right places for shopping and consumers. Under this way of thinking there is no place for public markets, old buildings, small shops and local products. Of course all the people do not agree with the previous concept. And in the case of Chalkis public market, there is a strong local team of different citizens who are trying to save, renew and reuse this old historical place.
