The picture was taken in Mumbai, India and shows „Dhobi Ghat“ a laundry quarter. You can see a chaotic looking assembly of buildings and laundry facilities in the front of the picture. In the background a skyscraper in it’s late construction phase is visible, further in the background you can see more big buildings and constructuion sites. On the left you can see a line of masts and the upper part of something, that looks like a train. Invisible information that can be extracted from the visible information: First the line of masts an the partly seen train are a good hint for a railroad track and based on the mass of masts you can imagine, that it is a large compound of several tracks. You also can see that the air is some kind hazy and smoggy, so air pollution seems to be a major problem in Mumbai. Secondly and more interesting and also usefully is instead, that the chaotic looking assembly of buildings and laundry facilities is an extremely well organized logistic system. People pick up clothes for laundry all over the city, collect them and transport them to the laundry quarter. There it is sorted depending on the kind of material and the needed handling during laundry. Clean clothes are sorted based on the destination and than delivered to their owners. All this happens in a very short amount of time and with an amazing small error rate. The traditional and grown with the city, logistic knowledge could be used to improve logistics all over the city. For example delivery services like DHL, UPS etc. needs many delivery vehicles in such big city agglomerations like Mumbai. Using more fine-tuned and better for the special city needs adapted logistics as done by the laundry system in Mumbai, should be able to reduce the number of needed delivery vehicles. Reducing the number of delivery vehicles will have a positive impact on the traffic load and the air pollution. So this could really support the creation of a more liveable urban space.
