1. This photo, which was taken in Johannesburg, South Africa, shows a patchwork of inner city buildings. The image clearly shows a variety of different styles and types of buildings, adorned with signage and advertising, clothing, satellite dishes and pigeons. The various building materials are evident, as well as signs of infrastructure, such as electricity and street lighting. 2. The image does not show any people, however it is clear from the use of the buildings that the area has a high density of inhabitants. The un-maintained state of the buildings also indicates that the inhabitants may be of a lower income. The image also depicts the use of the buildings, with the fore- and middle-ground buildings being mainly residential, while the building in the background is a commercial office building. Retail is also evident in the ground floor of the front buildings. The style of the buildings indicates which era the buildings were built in, which enables us to define the city’s growth. Lastly, the image also infers that there is a lack of public open and green space in the nearby vicinity. 3. The high density of lower-income residential inhabitants within the area, indicate a need for housing, amenities, and public facilities within the inner city. Suitable and accessible lower income and social housing is an imperative aspect of the city, and needs to be planned for and accommodated, along with the facilities that are required to support a residential development, such as schools, clinics, public parks, retail etc. Being aware of the necessity as well as the desired location of housing within a city is imperative in the challenge to create a more liveable urban space.
