Exercise 1: Making the invisible – visible
FC-01x Future Cities (1st Run) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"

1. Upload a photo from your area, or the closest urban area, (the photo must be taken by you) and comment all the information that is visible in this photo. This photo is taken in one of the considered- so called broader suburbs of Nicosia, Cyprus. In this photo we can see that there are no sidewalks and there aren’t any lanes for bicycles. Also there is no bus station or any other mass transportation system, equipment. The road surface is in bad shape and there is not proper urban equipment. We can see that there are large parcels of land which are empty and so undeveloped. Further we can see that there is some manhole covers in the middle of the street. 2. Identify and present two "invisible information" that can be extracted out of the visible information of this photo. The "invisible information" that can be extracted out of the visible information of this photo is that (1) from the manhole covers we can deduce that, there is sewage system in the region which is very important because of the high volume of waste water and (2) the large parcels of land which are empty results in a phenomenon which we call it suburban sprawl or urban sprawl. This phenomenon results mainly from the extension of the planning zones without proper analysis of the consequences. 3. Select one of your choices from the previous question and describe how this invisible information can become knowledge and contribute to the planning of a more liveable urban space. The urban sprawl phenomenon has very serious environmental and urban planning consequences. Very large parcels of land within the planning zones remain undeveloped. The consequences are: big economic cost of the infrastructure and extension of utilities network that have to be constructed along these properties and maintenance cost of the infrastructure and utilities network, further is very difficult for the public transportation to function well because of they have to cover big distances to pick potential passengers. The potential passengers are dispersed. Also in some cases it will not be feasible to build utilities network because of the large cost and will not be a viable investment. So the urban planners have to consider all these with the aim to plan better for a more liveable urban space. [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14344623124016726.jpg
