Boulevard de Magenta, Paris
FC-01x Future Cities (1st Run) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"

This is a photo of the Boulevard de Magenta, a busy street in Paris, taken in the late afternoon. There is a wealth of visible information in the photo. Much of it is related to transport: cars, traffic lights, a bus stop, a bike lane and both a bike rack for private bikes in the foreground and a velolib (short term loan bikes) station in the background. Other visible information relates to waste with large green wheelie bins as well as a street rubbish bin. The trees make the city greener and more pleasanter to live in. There are apartment buildings giving an indication of the density of housing and various shops. There is also a yellow post box. Two examples of invisible information that can be extracted from this picture are information about the management of waste and waste removal in the city and the use of the short-term loan "velib" bicycles. The invisible information from the use of the velib bicycles helps to plan the city to encourage their use, by tracking where and when people hire them and where they go. Since some of the more popular velolib stations are sometime empty, one way to get more information and help improve the system would be to have people register at a station when they would have rented one of the bikes but didn't because there were none available.
