FC-01x Future Cities (1st Run) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"

1) This is one of the skyline views one can get from the Kuala Lumpur City Center, I took this photograph when I had the opportunity in February 2015. The skyscrapers as well as smaller structures are a mixture of residential and commercial buildings, almost indistinguishable from a birds eye view. The structures are a mixture of contemporary and colonial buildings. 2) The two "invisible information" that can be taken is the lack of gradient that is usually seen as a city sprawls, which show the gradual shift from the main city centre towards urbanised housing suburbs, with a concentration of high-rises in the middle of the city that slowly spread to townhouses and double and single storey structures. Thus the uniqueness of this landscape shows that need for housing as well as increase of commercial buildings projected and expanded exponentially side by side. This reflects the mentality of an expanding and developing nation. Another aspect of information that becomes apparent is the lack of consistency of green space which suggests that there is a lack of emphasis of balancing human needs with environmental needs. The presence of trees is still reassuring amongst the concrete jungle, however it is vastly outnumbered by its concrete counterpart, which also shows the societal incline in regards of priorities. 3) These two sets of information can be used to bring awareness to members of society of the direction the city is moving towards. With this information, greater attentiveness towards city planning to balance the requirements of the people and the requirements of the environment, or rather, maintaining the psychological health of people through maintaining a connection with physical cues of nature. While this sustains itself in its own right, the sustainability of this city in the long term is questionable, and should be investigated using these types of "invisible information".
