City-Cuttack,India. This picture was taken from a foot-over-bridge on the main road of the commercial centre. More than a thousand years old, this was the capital of the state of Orissa for almost nine centuries & is now the commercial capital which hosts a large number of trading and business houses in and around the city. Visible information incules: 1.The flow of traffic. 2.The modes of transportation or vehicles used by the localites-bicycles, old buses, auto rickshaws, motorbikes and four wheelers. 3.The types and forms of buildings, some very old buildings stand beside the newly constructed ones. 4.The skyline, which comprises of flat roofs of low-rise buildings, telecommunication towers rising way above them, very large advertisement hoardings and trees. 5.The townsfolk, their activities, their way of dressing. 6.Aesthetics and maintenance of the area-unhealthy vegetation on the divider, haphazard growth of structures. There is congestion and there are no setbacks between structures. 7.Functional attributes-the pedestrian activities and parking facilities merge with the road having heavy vehicular traffic. Invisible information obtained: 1.The importance of the area in the commercial city. 2.Economic status of the residents and users. 3.The development of architecture in the area. 4.The overall impression of the city's built-up form. 5.The culture and way of living of the townsfolk. 6.Environment and air quality of the area, need for cleaning and maintenance of sidewalks and vegetation. Need to enforce strict building bye-laws. 7.Need for seggregation of activities to develop a safer space. Inference: Developing this city is a very sensitive issue given its age and history, the existing centuries-old structures, and undeveloped & underdeveloped infrastructure like overhead electric lines, road-side open drainage and narrow street widths. Inspite of this, proper enforcement of building laws, cleanliness & maintenance of structures and spaces, seggregation of activities using architectural measures and a development that keeps in mind the economy & culture of the residents will go a long way to make the city sustainable.
