Pittsburgh's future - ![forks of the Ohio river][1] 1) The natural resource of clean waterways and healthy a biodiverse region. Vibrant people that value the quality of life in the area and are willing to contribute to the community. Capital re-investment to improve present conditions and secure continued opportunity into the future. 2) My City, Pittsburgh in the state Pennsylvania in the United States, is located on the forks of the Ohio River which feeds into the Mississippi River and on to the Gulf of Mexico. The rivers (the Ohio, Monongahela, and Allegheny) and the streams that feed them through the forested foothills of the Appalachian Mountains comprise a beautiful setting, and the area’s distance from the dense population of the East Coast has left much of the natural landscape in the region intact and undeveloped. It was founded under the name Pittsburgh a little more than 250 years ago. The City’s position on a major waterway caused it to become an early ‘Gateway to the West’ during the european settlement of North America. Later it became a center of Industry due to the same rivers as sources of transportation of raw materials to the city and of finished goods away from it, and due to the abundance of coal in the area. This brought European immigrants to the city over a period of almost a hundred years to work in the industrial center. The industrial output created capital and led to the creation of corporate headquarters that sprung up from the many industries established then. Since early in the 20th century, led by the example of Andrew Carnegie's philanthropy Pittsburgh has had a strong tradition of public-private partnership in projects to improve life in the city and some of the wealth generated by industry was used to develop the City's educational and cultural facilities, to build parks, museums, and other public works. ![homes, factories, and office buildings seen from north of Pittsburgh][2] Due to global economic conditions and the depletion of the coal resources in the area, the flow of immigrants that had come to Pittsburgh for industrial jobs slowed and then stopped, and their children began to move to other cities to pursue other professions. Leading into that time the corporate headquarters and centers of learning had begun to attract immigrants to work for those industries in a different capacity and to seek an education here. In the 1980's Pittsburgh lost close to a hundred thousand jobs in the steel manufacturing and related industries. For 25 years the City's population declined. Riverfront spaces that had previously been the home to large industrial sites became vacant. But the public private partnerships that had been established during the period of industrial activity continued to work toward the City's improvement and over time many of the former industrial areas have been developed into parks, shopping and entertainment districts and residential areas, increasing the attractiveness of parts of the city that had been unpleasant industrial zones This gave the citizens access to the waterfront for picnicking fishing boating and other activities of entertainment and leisure, improving their quality of life. The cost of living remained low during this period of economic depression, further contributing to the city's attractiveness to potential immigrants. Over the past 5 years the city's population has begun to increase and many tech companies have begun to establish headquarters in the city. This has led to new inflows of capital and immigrants from East Asia, India, and around the US and other parts of the world. ![Allegheny river back channel][3] 3) As the industrial concerns made the city into a form that suited their needs and beliefs, so must the current generation reimagine and invest into making the city work for their lives and vision. The goals of Pittsburgh are similar to those of many places throughout the world, improving transit, sustainability and quality of life. One of Pittsburgh’s advantages is the vacuum left by the departure of the old industrial model. There is prime real estate available on the waterfronts available for new purposes and there is an opportunity for people with vision to create their own systems that will replace the directing power the industrial concerns used to exercise. Also like many cities Pittsburgh suffered the decline of its public transportation system over the last half century and has been building homes and infrastructure that are unsustainable like most of North America. By investing in these areas Pittsburgh can continue to improve its attractiveness to immigrants that can sustain the development if the City.
