People, water and food in Singapore - food
FC-01x Future Cities (1st Run) - Exercise 2: "Stocks and Flows"

• Food: the third example I picked is stocks and flows of food. Whilst the inbound flows of food aren’t visible on the picture I attached, at least the consumption and outbound ports are. The pictures represent a hawker centre which is the typical location of Singaporeans to eat their meals from breakfast to dinner. Food and other waste however have to be collected and the second picture represents a refuse collection point a few meters away from the hawker centre. Trash is collected, compacted and picked up by Lorries to be taken to the island where Singapore incinerates most of its waste. 3 – How these stocks and flows could change in the future for the benefit of my area: • Food: the flows of food in Singapore could be improved in terms of developing urban farming options and re-connecting people with the origins of their food. My upbringing in Europe gave me a chance to experience much more with the origins of the produce we would consume and I feel this is missing in Singapore. Again, our experience in the Hague of small cultivation plots for schoolchildren to use and grow food (each school/class in turn) was a very interesting experiment in that respect. Combination of a picture of a typical « hawker centre”, in other words a food stall in Singapore together with a refuse collection/compacting point about 80m from that same hawker centre. ![enter image description here][1] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1433406774333347.jpg
