A case in Florianopolis, SC , Brazil
FC-01x Future Cities (1st Run) - Exercise 2: "Stocks and Flows"

![stock n flow sketch of my city ][1] I made a sketch to explain the main stock and flows that exist in my city. Florianópolis receives every day a large numbers of people coming from next municipalities (especially San Jose, Palhoça and Biguaçu ) to work, study and use the hospitals. These people fill the town for a while and when they leave, some areas as the downtown, are deserted. Some poor people seek to live close to where there is more supply of labor , but can not afford to buy or rent houses , so they were building their homes in the nearby hills forming "favelas". The government of Florianopolis prohibits factories, production and culture , food and other products must come from other cities daily, increasing traffic on the roads in some periods of the day. Tourism is a important part of the economy and are a case of stock and flow , on holidays Florianópolis receives large number of tourists arriving through the bridges and especially through the airport localized in the south of the island. However a long time the city does not invest in infrastructure and all holidays is overcrowded. ![Felipe Schimidt street at day][2] ![Felipe Schimidt street at night][3] I snapped two photos at the same location at different times to demonstrate how the pendulous migration affects areas of the city. From 7:00-19:00 some streets are alive with people strolling, shopping and work. But the night those same streets are empty and full of beggars. I think the mix of uses (residence, trade and service) would help to bring life 24hrs for the city. ![highway sc401 - Palhoça][4] I made this photo in January, but congestion is a common problem created by the amount of trucks that share the roads with cars and motorcycles. In other states of Brazil there are times that trucks are prohibited, but that does not solve the problem. The logistics to supply the city needs to think about how it will grow , as have factories nearby without generating pollution. It is a challenge that needs to be studied. ![Canasvieiras beach][5] Every year the city gets crowded on holidays. The beaches, shopping malls and streets are congested and appear the problems: lack of water, lack of light, high prices in supermarkets and long traffic jams. The city should prepare for population growth through tourism, investments in road systems and creating new tourist routes, to spread the flow of people in the city (today it is located in the north as shown in the sketch).
