People, water and food in Singapore - water
FC-01x Future Cities (1st Run) - Exercise 2: "Stocks and Flows"
Uploaded on 2015-06-04 by ArnaudAyral
• Water: Singapore does not have access to large water reserves and is dependent upon importation of large quantities of water from neighbouring Malaysia which carries economic and strategic consequences. On the other hand, water flows in Singapore are very significant and rain fall is large and rather brutal. As a result, flows of water during heavy tropical downpours have to be managed carefully and the picture attached shows the massive drains that Singapore has to develop and maintain in order to cope with that. However in addition to managing the flows of water, Singapore has had to increase its resilience develop large stocks of freshwater and entire parts of the island (often man-made such as Marine reservoir) have been developed to offer Singapore increased water stocks. 3 – How these stocks and flows could change in the future for the benefit of my area: • Water: water is not only a requirement and resource but also an architectural and urban feature. I feel that more could be done in my area towards opening up water to public use including recreational. This is already the case in some parts of Singapore (Marina Bay, Punggol again) but more could be done especially given my experience of the Netherlands where access to water for recreation is outstanding.
