People, water and food in Singapore - people
FC-01x Future Cities (1st Run) - Exercise 2: "Stocks and Flows"
Uploaded on 2015-06-04 by ArnaudAyral
There are numerous stocks and flows playing a major role in my neighbourhood in Singapore and in the wider Singapore city itself. The 3 I have chosen to cover are people, water and food. All 3 are illustrated with photographs submitted separately. 2 – Description of the findings: • People: Singapore boasts a growing population in spite of a very limited land size and already one of the highest population densities on the planet. The stocks and flows of people are thus remarkably important and critical in Singapore. The example I have chosen to illustrate is the Serangoon interchange which is my neighbourhood hub. The picture presents a view of a main road, a large bus interchange as well as an elevated motorway in addition to the entrance of an MRT (underground metro) station. Those are good illustration of the stocks of people (the people residing in the apartment blocks - HDB) but the very heavy flows of people can be easily inferred from the very dense transportation network offering various modes of public and private transport. 3 – How these stocks and flows could change in the future for the benefit of my area: • People: Whilst already dense and generally of excellent quality, the public transport system in Singapore in many areas is stretched to the limit. Large investments are in progress towards more buses, new or extended MRT lines and faster intervals between MRT trains (down to 100s between trains) but it is obvious that Singapore cannot afford to continue having distant and segregated residential and occupational areas as the people flows will simply continue to increase beyond the system capacity. Initiatives have been taken towards mixed developments in news areas where residential developments with good amenities, schooling, shopping and leisure options are implemented adjacent to large employment basins. Examples of that are the Punggol development in the vicinity of the industrialised north of Singapore or otherwise the Marina Bay future plans with extensive residential buildings mingled within the business and leisure district.
