1. Flow of people commuting in and out of town 2. Flow of food and other goods enabling life in town 3. Flow of tourists that make the town's economy more sustainable The **flow of commuters** in an out of town includes the people that live in town (and so are included in its **stock of inhabitants**) but commute daily to work in the bigger and close town of Porto, but also the flow of people that live in more distant suburbs and commute to Vila Nova de Gaia to work in commerce or other economic activities like tourism. In the picture below you can see daily commuters waiting for a bus. Since the flow of commuters that come to town is mainly done by bus (with significant pollution in rush hours) an extension of the light metro line to other suburb location might significantly improve traffic and reduce pollution. ![Daily commuters waiting for a bus in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal][1] There is, of course the daily **flow of goods** in and out of town, including food that enables life in town. Most of these goods come from out of town but we can see a trend of growing some agriculture inside of town (building a **stock of food**), and this could improve life with less pollution related to movement of goods and better access to fresh products for some of its inhabitants. Finally the **flow of tourists** visiting the town and its attractions in growing numbers every year is a critical flow for the local economy, enabling a better life for residents that benefit from the financial inflow related to leisure activities, as can be seen in the picture below, showing tourist cruises in the Douro river ![Tourist river cruises in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal][2] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14338393106049047.jpg [2]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1433840023775806.jpg
