![Florianópolis - Old town][1] 1) Street life on Saturday ! Each Saturday, the streets of the old town are transformed in a small market with second-hand and hand-crafted things : clothes, decoration, aromatherapy, books, etc. The market is very welcomed by citizens. The sky is blue and even if we are in autumn, the weather is warm and hot. The streets are made of pavements and if you look carefully you can see some grass growing in the interstices. The telephonic and electric lines are overhead. Here, the buildings are not too high : 5 or 6 floors maximum in contrast of the modern tower you can see faraway. And if you look at the building right on your right, you can see air conditioner engines : this is how Brazilians fight against heat ! This is a shopping street (the market is only on Saturday) with coffee shop, clothes shop, furnitures for home, food shops, etc. 2) Invisible informations There are many invisible informations such as : - the climate : very hot and huge humidity even in the morning ! It becomes uncomfortable very quickly. - the street is not a pedestrian street : this is a road which is closed to cars only on Saturday - the Facebook and Instagram pages of this market - the urban policy : this event happens since 2013 each Saturday. The project "Viva a cidade" (enjoy the city) was created by the prefecture and the chamber of commerce with the idea to promote and revitalize the old town which was deserted; and to value the common spaces (streets) with conviviality. - people on the street, who's who : we can see many people on the streets but who are they ? tourists, inhabitants of Florianópolis, district residents, etc. ? - history and geography : before the construction of the old town, there was the sea. The city was gained over the sea. 3) People on the street This Saturday market is very welcomed by the merchants who are very pleased to play the game and installed a part of their shop in the streets, for example tables and chairs for restaurants and coffee shops. Also, the residents are happy because this is a day without cars so children can play and be safe, you can have talk during long time with your friends in the streets (Brazilians are very talkative), etc. The satisfaction of residents and merchants is very important and gives a good return to the urban policy to adapt the project and re-vitalize the old town. Also, the tourist numbers is an important source of information: are they attracted by the event or not ? Since 3 years, the Saturday market gains a huge success. And now, it's possible to see how this activity started to change the old town. Little by little, the abandoned buildings are restored. The old town starts to be the place to be with its specific Brazilian life style in a chill way : typical restaurants, bars and coffee shops, the colours of the buildings which are not too high, the little and specific shops (aroma therapy, fruits and vegetables, healthy style), etc. In few years, the old town will be the place to be : gentrification is on its way.
