in 2010 i worked in design & build new extension for old existing building in Abu Dhabi , both parts (the old & the new ) was using - almost - the same main construction processes & materials: masonry block , steel & concrete...etc, but the material's globalized economic map was changed since the time of construction of the old part ! , adding to considerations new external cladding materials, which become almost compulsory to achieve minimum thermal bridging with minimum coast, alive example of what mentioned above is the Aluminum composite panel,showed in picture. united Arab emirates use to be (& still ) Recognized manufacturer & exporter for raw aluminum which was used in manufacturing the aluminum composite panels used earlier as building cladding in other countries, but since applying new Sustainability regulations admitted by authorities. in order to reduce power consumption, moreover , future or modern theme which can be added using this material become preferable & with building revolution took place in the country, United Arab emirate become an importer for the same material again! the same -some how - applies for the double glass facades. at the end,i believe engineering codes & specifications applied in country are had always been one of the main players of changing globalized economic map.
