Although Spain is a major exporter of building materials and services and home to some of the largest construction firms in the world (Acciona, Ferrovial, ACS, FCC), the Spanish construction sector is heavily influenced by international capital and processes: Like many new public buildings across Europe, much of the Leitat’s new construction is funded by the European Union. The design and construction process are also subject to the EU’s health and safety and environmental regulation. The relative size of the EU label on the board compared to that of the Spanish government gives an idea of the role of EU funds and regulation and the overall internationalization of building construction in Europe. The photo also shows a Nissan truck. Although Nissan has a plant in the city, its designs and components are imported from overseas.
