This picture shows part of the town Chora of the -not so popular- greek island of Samothrake at the northern Aegean sea. This island hadn't any tourists until the last years, because of its self-dependent economy, based on agriculture. The main characteristics of the island is that it has a pretty high mountain and numerous of waterfalls falling into lakes that end up to rivers which lead to the sea. These rivers have been the basic material for the island's traditional architecture. River stones were used to built the the thick walls of the house and smaller ones to keep the roof tiles in their place during the winds' period. With the development of transportation, locals had the opportunity to import more common materials at the island which were easier to use at the construction. So, carrying big, heavy stones from the riversides was replaced with carrying bricks and concrete. And, as you might be able to see in the picture, the characteristic rough surface of the walls is now replaced from the even brick surface.
