Istanbul, and indeed other Turkish cities, are less obviously global in their sourcing of construction materials than many other cities in the world. Efforts to capture the global nature of construction in Istanbul by leaning out the car window to take a photograph of a major construction site will not suffice, as Turkey is a major exporter of concrete and steel, and produces many other construction materials. Concrete and steel represent the mainstays of Turkish urban construction. One needs to look closer to discover the global elements in Turkish construction. Turkey's major imports include insulated wire, liquid and air pumps, low voltage protection equipment, electrical transformers and other such items. These products tend to be less apparent from a spectator's pint of view, and tend to come in at a later stage of a building's development. All the same, they are part of a construction process that is most certainly global. Perhaps the most significant (and readily observable) internationally-sourced construction-based items are the large construction vehicles involved in the process (some of which you can see in my photograph, if your eyesight is good).
