This was the creation of an office for a recycling center in South Africa, that sought to operate from as close to a zero budget basis as possible. The lecture have omitted a very large part of what happen in Africa. On one hand first world building as being created. However more importantly informal sector construction in terms of units produced is probably far higher in South Africa. Th example can be seen below. The criteria is what is the absolute minimum required. In this case some second hand roof sheets and pole. This was sufficent for a structure and a roof. A concrete floor would have been nice but not essential thus that part was omitted saving around maybe US$1,000. All material was readily available. A more expensive option is to recycled wooden pallets instead of the second hand roof sheets. However if you can get free pallets obviously that is better. Thus the involvement with the globalized economy is not there. This community has possibly 500,000 people who live informally in structures such as this office. They hookup illegally to electricity supply, which is in turn tolerated by government. A lot of such structures even have cable TV in time! ![enter image description here][1] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1415010121846571.jpg
