The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Mumbai • The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel that stands elegantly facing the iconic ‘Gateway of India’ was built by the Indian architects Sitaram Khanderao Vaidya and D. N. Mirza, commissioned by the Tata Group headed by Sir Jamsedji Tata • The project was completed by British architect W. A. Chambers after Vaidya’s untimely death. • It was opened on the 16th of December 1903. • The factors which compel the building to depicts a globalised economy are: 1. The central red dome of the hotel was made from the same pre-fabricated steel used to build the Eiffel Tower of Paris. The steel was specially imported from France, a century ago, by Tata. 2. It contains one of worlds very few, at that time, steam elevator designed by the American elevator company – Otis. 3. Today, it stands as a classic destination for tourists and foreign businessmen to stay in and feel the rustic essence of the city of Mumbai and India, through this it is solving its purpose to globalize the city and its various domains.
