This tower has been the center of the attention of New Yorkers for the last years. Not just because the symbolic meaning it represents, but also due to its monumentality: a new symbol of the city and, according to its designers, “one of the safest towers in the world”. I was living in New York while it was under construction. From outside, concrete, steel and glass were the only materials one could see: “materials from the globalized world”. However, it is one of the world’s greenest buildings (Architectural Digest, A LOOK AT THE NEW ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER): much of the materials used come from postindustrial recycled materials and more than three-quarters of its waste will be recycled. Using building components “of a globalized economy”, when combined with a sustainable strategy can be a smart approach to take advantage of existing best practices while reducing the environmental impact of the building process.
