It has its advantages and disadvantages. Advantage is more of the regional architectural design which has proved to be sustainable for quite sometime (especially when local environment is not disrupted) and has allowed features such as passive cooling, use of local materials, among others. However, if we talk about speed and fast construction, most cities nowadays use the conventional construction techniques which is used globally. This picture is an ongoing construction of a condominium here in Cagayan de Oro. It is one of the first condominiums here as condos are not popular few years ago. Cagayan de Oro has developed fast in a few span of years and I believe that it was impacted by the globalization of economy wherein other nationalities will have ease of access to the city, wherein local activities are now observable by many people in internet, where businesses flourish, etc. As observed, the usual reinforcing bars and concrete are the basic or usual structural components here in the Philippines as it is good for strength, durability, and especially when typhoons or earthquakes come. For higher bending for earthquakes, more reinforcing bars could be used. In this picture two of the significant new construction techniques (new here in CDO) is the use of prefab concrete to cover the walls and the use of construction pulley to deliver materials on top of the structure. Cities especially when met with questions as how to develop their cities usually will have a common perception that the more tall glass, steel, and concrete structures the better as it usually signifies high economic activity, therefore progress. Other cities might not be well ready or will not be ready for these as they will opt to value heritage or give importance to other structures as these new construction techniques could pose danger to those existing structures.
