The picture captures a cyclist and a metro-station at New Delhi in India, which showcases how a simple mode of travel (bicycles built out of minimum materials)can be effective in transporting people and similarly a metro station (involves complex construction) transports large volume of population. This is a good example to demonstrate the Global Construction Approach in India and how globalized economy has influenced modern buildings/products. Materials are procured both locally and from distant lands to cater to the “needs” and “ideas” of producers and users alike. The table points out a few of those: 1) Materials obtained locally are: Various parts of Bicycle: Manufactured and Assembled locally in India; Tiles : Made out of local stone-dust/clay; Railing/Posts/Columns: Cast out of Iron/Steel procured locally; Concrete: Usually a mix of cement, sand and aggregates obtained locally; Granite: From quarries around the outskirts of Delhi; PVC Sheets/Rolled Sheets: Manufactured by local companies. 2) Materials obtained globally are: Metro Train: Manufactured by Bombardier Inc. (Canada); Glass: Tinted Reinforced imported from Japan; Billboards/Displays: Though assembled locally but components are obtained globally (mainly USA); HVAC: Air-conditioning equipments produced by Japanese; Rail-Track - Produced by Alstom; Thus, we can understand the ramification of the new age globalized construction approach.
