This is the site of the new Harvard Museum renovation designed by Renzo Piano in Cambridge MA. Rubble in the foreground is all that remains of Charles Gwathmey's Werner Otto Hall. The standing brick shell is the Fogg Museum. Corner of Corbu's Carpenter Center is just visible on the left. (photo a couple years ago) Completed this year the new Harvard Museum building will open in November 2014. It is a renovation and a new wing that together will house three museums in one building. The whole building is topped by a great steel and glass roof which admits natural light to the interior. The Renzo Piano Building Workshop is exacting in the details of construction, the selection of building materials, and the quality of work. The steel structure for the new glass roof is erected with components assembled in Germany. The steel subcontractor in turn may have sourced the structural shapes from steel mills located almost anywhere in the world. It is not unusual for individual components to cross multiple oceans and travel thousands of miles through multiple stages of production before they are finally assembled in the completed building.
