Traffic cameras and sensors and intelligent signaling systems. Sensors include cameras, and line of sight sensors and inductive loop sensors in street. The commuter rail signal crossing is also part of a complex signal and sensor network. Both systems coordinate with each other for greater efficiency. Traffic light sensors are able to identify presence of a vehicle waiting for a signal. The timing of the signal sequence can be adjusted automatically in response to this "awareness." The system also provides municipal authority with ability to monitor activity levels in the intersection and also provides for remote operation in case of emergency. When an emergency vehicle is approaching the intersection a flashing white strobe with stop signals in all directions alerts everyone who can see it to yield the intersection to the emergency vehicle. Because this intersection is proximate to a commuter railroad crossing it is also able to coordinate with that siginal. The signal continues to function in all directions but prevents traffic flow toward the crossing until it is open. It is possible to add remote visual monitoring of the intersection traffic flow and with additional systems law enforcement can record license identification to document traffic violations. The ability to issue citations by mail to violators is gaining acceptance. The technology is not limited to intersections and is also found on moving police vehicles. Invisible information becomes Knowledge. These systems collect data from sensors and multiple inputs provide context for the data. Intelligent systems are able to condense information from the data flow that becomes useful and actionable. Valuable evidence based knowledge is enabled by smart systems that are able to combine data and information. The data / information, flow can be leveraged by knowledge systems to achieve greater efficiencies. The information gathered enables a knowledge base that can inform planning decisions.
