Yet what's invisible and what most non-locals don't know is that it's also a popular suicide bridge. It actually has the second highest number of suicides in the world. Destitute souls jump off the bridge and into the water and most are killed by the impact. A diagram years ago showed how many suicides happened at exactly what location on the bridge. It was disconcerting. Suicide hotline signs are seen on the bridge and remind people there's hope. Funding for a suicide barrier was approved recently to install a net below the bridge. The completion is estimated to be in 2018. Another invisible, relatively new force affecting the already-crowded city now is the gentrification resulting from the tech boom. New posh condos have replaced old buildings all over the city. Young millionaires are moving in and pushing poor and even middle class people out. There have been many heated discussions but no good solution. Most tourists don't realize how hard it is to live in the beautiful City by the Bay.
