Visible This is a pedestrianised street in the City Centre Taken at around 13:00, it shows low level of pedestrian traffic at this end of the High St; however looking carefully into the depth of the picture, the volume increase as you move towards the main centre of the High Street where the major department shops are sited. Removing the traffic has allowed for the visible:- - free movement of people within the area, - the planting of trees in the open space, bringing greenery - the emergence of a street cafe culture The presence of railings, ensuring both the absence of vehicles from the area and safety of people, has also become a parking station for bicycles, which is becoming an increasngly popular form of transport within the city The variation in architecture over 200 years from the Saracens Head Hotel to the 60's fronted shop and office block, meaning that it is the pedestrian area which have to join the unrelated style together; eg curves, and brick colours, trees. A mix of retail, office and leisure usage. Invisible 1. - Behind the buildings on the left a major new development has commenced which will enhance the economy of this end of the High Street 2. - The precise pathway of earlier roads and pathways has been lost, but no doubt could be discovered from underlying foundations and groundworks Future Knowing 1 above, enables a rethink of how this area might become used in the future, with the possibility of encouraging more street style cafe development and so extending the economic use and life of this area. This in turn could be enhanced by retailers being allowed longer opening hours and hence grow the volumes of pedestrian traffic in this area as well as bicycle users, if more cycle racks were available. ][1] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14139848781845281.jpg
