FC-01x Future Cities (1st Run) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"

The picture is taken in Place de la Comédie - Montpellier, France. Firstly, in gathering data by doing a lecture based on observations of the physical content on different depths of field, we can notice on a larger scale a square, basically a large, open space containing buildings placed, grouped and oriented in order to create a certain spatial configuration. Due to the low-rise buildings, we can also notice the large openness towards the sky. On a relatively more detailed scale, thanks to the dimensions of the square, we can see the presence of a large number of people and also a couple of cars, following different trajectories. The same dimensions offer the occasion of installing different commercial activities, as it can be seen in a further plane: pub umbrellas, market stalls. Furthermore, it can be noticed the two streets that arrive in the square, having different degrees of illumination and also the presence of a single natural element – a tree. By doing a more rational and interpretative lecture based on the previous observations, it can be noticed two invisible informations. Taking into account the importance of a square, the high number of people in the photo, the couple of cars, it can be extracted the idea of movement; in the same manner, taking into account the dimensions of the space, the openness towards the sky (low-rise buildings) and the relatively homogeneous façades it can be extracted the idea of visibility. The two actually coexist and influence each other. Thus, visibility is an invisible information which can become knowledge by taking into consideration that it can influence the dynamics of a space (movement patterns of different people, of different social classes, with different interests) and it can relate to functional patterns (movement, land use, area differentiation), that it can influence the manner that people locate themselves in a certain open space and their field of orientation (in order to feel yourself more secure in a space that lets you find a benchmark) and that can also become a criteria for well-being when in public space.
