This is a picture of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, taken from the Vitosha mountain. 1. What is the information, visible in this photo? We can see from the photo is that the city is situated in a valley, in the foot of a mountain. The photo reveals there are a lot of green areas in the city, some of which are very big in space and are centrally located. We can also observe that there is tall and high construction which in the most cases is mixed, but there are also spaces with prevailing low construction. The city looks scattered and not very ordered in space. 2. Invisible information: - The city is situated in a valley, which means that the space for its eventual sprawl is limited by the mountain. A big city is related to heavy traffic and industry, which generates a lot of air pollution. Since the city is surrounded by mountains, this reduces the possibility of self-cleaning of the air and makes the city prone to pollution. - We can see that the city has been growing and has reached some of the small villages in its periphery which are now its satellites. - The fact that the city looks not that well-structured, tells us it has grown rather chaotically in time without good planning and a clear perspective. 3. How this invisible information can become knowledge: The fact the city has been growing and has reached some of the small villages in its periphery shows that the processes of suburbanization has begun, and the population will start moving to the nearest small settlements which have good access to the city. If the governors of the city decide, they may direct the population towards certain settlements by improving the infrastructure and facilitating their access.
