In this picture, taken in São Paulo, Brazil, we can see the Theatro Municipal, a regular flow of people, a nice state of conservation in the urban infrastructure, some trees and modern buildings. 1 - We can notice here that the contrast between old and new are common factors in a big city, and the government must make sure to create the necessary instruments to keep the harmony. But what we cannot see is that this building was endangered in the 20th century, when the modern movement became a fever amongst Brazilian architects. The rules that were supposed to protect old buildings, an important part of our history, were being used in the advance of modernism, protecting only the ones considered real Brazilian architecture, and eclectic buildings couldn't be protected. New administration came to the organ responsible for the historic patrimony, with the necessary adaptations. 2 - It's also visible that it was inspired in the Opéra de Paris, another reason of the modernist's rage against it. But there's a huge importance for the modern movement. There happened the Week of Modern Art of 1922, the most decisive mark of modernism in Brazil. All information must be gathered from documents, pictures, report of citizens. Using this as basis, we can do further research to analyze the needs of the city and what would be the impact of changes in the older parts. Then, we can properly plan the necessary changes. We won't build a lot of cities from sketch, big part of our work in urban planning is to resolve problems in a existent urban pattern, so it's essential to understand this natural process of modification.
