In the picture you can see the apartments in the apartment buildings, and the underground parking garage. In some apartment lights are on, in other everything is still dark. As you can see, the parking garage is not filled with cars yet. The picture tells u how many people are at home, and how many cars are in the house (the parking garage is used by the inhabitants of the apartment buildings). We do not know of all the inhabitants are working people, but we do know that at this time many people aren't at home. The factor 'time' is not present in this picture, but by visiting this place later in the evening it will show that normally al the apartments are lit. This kind of visible information makes it possible to get invisible information (or at least make some good guesses). Let's assume most of the inhabitants are working people. At this time they are not at home, and traveling during rush hour. In other words: at 6 pm lots of people are moving home. When we know at what time people are returning to their homes, we can try to improve the traffic situation. For example: traffic lights could be adapted, certain roads in the city could be blocked (or not) etc. When people are at home, they consume more energy. At this time, the energy consumption in the buildings is not very high, since moest people are not at home. By observing the building several evenings and nights, we can infer predictions concerning the use of energy, water and gas during the week. Furthermore the pictures tells us how many inhabitant have many cars, relatively. We can makes prediction in respect of car use, pollution etc. This is invisible information that can be used to optimize the supply of energy, and make the energy system more sustainable. The same goes for the use of water and water supply. ![apartment buildings][1] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14180490592576269.jpg
