Making the Invisible Visible: Devonport, New Zealand
FC-01x Future Cities (1st Run) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"

This photograph shows the village area within the suburb I live in known as Devonport. Visible Information: The majority of the area is medium-density mixed use buildings with in most cases the ground floor being commercial and the upper floor(s) being residential. This is a bustling area with many cafes and restaurants along with a library and two parks. Nearby to this area is the ferry terminal which takes people to Auckland City for work and University (15mins). Car Parking in the area is quite hard to get. This is because the Council has tried to ensure the area is as pedestrian friendly as possible. This is supported by having many pedestrian crossings and wide footpaths. Invisible Information: The lack of car parking shows that using vehicles to navigate through the area is difficult and better achieved by walking or taking local public transport. This is quite difficult as Auckland people predominantly use privately owned vehicles to travel. Devonport is a very wealthy suburb with many upper class people residing in the neighbourhood. The unseen information of this point is the big income equity gap between these people and poorer people in suburbs not far away. This equity gap leads to unaffordable housing, poor health and lower opportunities for those who can't afford to achieve higher qualifications. Improvements to Planning: It has been mentioned that Auckland predominately uses personal vehicles for travel, leading to congestion and pollution. Public transport needs to be a stronger focus in the city to ensure that pedestrian friendly areas such as Devonport are more common. Devonport itself could easily provide alternative means of transport to reduce cars such as adding bike racks or even trams or light rail in the area. This could be done by completely removing the car parking from the main streets and only allowing it in the side streets. This would help to enhance the area and make it more aesthetically pleasing.
