[1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14166815562119034.jpg This is a city segment in Zurich at noon and is called Schanzengraben. The picture was taken on one of the rare sunny days in fall. VISIBLE: As it might not seem like from the very first glance, the place is quite rich with urban components such as water, green areas, streets, pedestrian areas, buildings, etc.. INVISIBLE: 1. When looking at the busy street in the background contrasting with the resting girl on the parapet in the forefront, one can imply that the place is remote and far from city buzz. The combination of its tranquility and the river below that in its turn signifies continuity, this place could be perceived as "cloistered" city esplanade. 2. Looking carefully at the built elements; the retaining wall below the fir-tree (that used to be the moat of Zurich's third fortification dating back to 1942), the different styles of the building facades built in different times, and finally the construction crane in the very back, it becomes clear that this place has a rich history and continues to grow. I would like to emphasize the second finding. Any city is richer with its history. Apart from carrying the memory of the city and displaying it to its inhabitants, these historical layers play ever more significant role, when successfully adapted to the contemporary life of the city. What makes the city further successful is its potential to future growth, while maintaining its past.
