[1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14132015373416108.jpg The photo shows the entrance to the Llacuna Metro station in Barcelona’s Poblenou neighbourhood. The area is historically a mix of light industry and working class residents but has recently been designated as the @22 innovation district by the city government. The photo shows a variety of available modes of local transport (metro, bike share, cars, scooters, walk, taxi) as well as the mixed-use nature of the neighbourhood, comprising residences, shops and wholesale commercial uses (on the far left edge of the picture). INVISIBLE INFORMATION: The photo shows a docking station of Barcelona’s Bicing bicycle sharing scheme. The electronic nature of the scheme, with smart cards providing access to bikes and a smartphone app showing nearby available bikes and docking spaces, creates an intricate track record of the bikes’ usage patterns. The photo also shows two small convenience stores. The shops cater to both local residents and commuters working nearby. Interestingly, despite their relatively small size, both shops register sales and manage their inventory with barcodes scanners and many transactions are paid electronically with cards. KNOWLEDGE: The usage data generated by the bike share scheme can be used to better understand commuting pattern and functional relationships between neighbourhoods in the city. The information derived from this can in turn be used e.g. for decisions about the provision of new public transport (for rainy days when cyclists may otherwise use a car), zoning (e.g. provide more nearby residences), and for emergency services (to better understand the daytime population of this traditionally low density neighbourhood).
