Barkley village is home to many businesses including banks, boutiques, restaurants, a grocery store, investment groups, and realty organizations. Buildings are of two types: multi level office buildings, or those with commercial space on the bottom with 1-5 floors of residential space on top. It has numerous large lots to accommodate the many people commuting to work within the district, as it is fairly distant from the rest of Bellingham. Many people who live in Barkley village do not work in it, and most who work here either own homes in another district, or cannot afford the high rent of the newly built units above commercial spaces. There are a total of 4 bus stops within the Barkley Village area, but most people choose to drive, since parking is free and the 3 bus routes within the area are all quite long and fairly inefficient. Priorities for movement within Barkley village have been for cars, so sidewalks follow inefficient paths that don't feel very secure, and roads to and within the area feel overwhelming and dangerous as a bicyclist. As a result, many people choose to drive from one end to the other, even though it takes less than 10 minutes to walk from one end to the other.
