The city is a center of knowledge industries, including biotech, wireless telecom, and finance. It is also a magnet for people, and has witnessed substantial population in flow and real estate appreciation, as the land for building is somewhat constrained. One stock (and flow) that is critical to the technological sophistication of the city is the data networks that support internet communication. UCSD has created a data hub with some of the highest capacity bandwidth channels in the planet, as I understand it (this is the subject of the image in this post). Many types of computation and analysis required for applications such as telemedicine require incredible bandwidth. Increasing the throughput of the internet is therefore paramount to the growth and prosperity of the city long term. A virtuous cycle will be created by technological platforms that enable advanced research and analytics, that in turn spawn innovation and draws the best and brightest from all over the world to work here (and live here). That process is well underway and bodes well for the future of this city.
