The bulk goods being exported and imported from the harbour are a very important flow for the city. Since Rotterdam is the biggest harbour in Europe it has a lot of goods coming in and out everyday. This means that there is a lot of boat traffic and also that a lot of people in Rotterdam earn their money some way related to the harbour activities. 2. The stock of land, which is in Rotterdam not just a regular stock. Last years they are expanding the harbour towards the sea, to be able to have more harbour activity (and to maintain the city in the meanwhile). The land we can see on the map that kind of sticks out, is actually artificially added. They are still adding more land there (which I didn't draw on the map). This means that the stock of land is actually in that particular area more of a flow. 3. The stock of people. Rotterdam counts 1.208.854 people in the greater city area and 562.530 houses. Rotterdam is a very multicultural city, which means that most people are not just living there their entire life. Rotterdam is an ever flowing city with the people there. Right now many starters and students start living there, because it is cheaper than Amsterdam, while it starts to become just as lively. These groups of people bring their own goods into the city. In Rotterdam you can find all kinds of food, from mandioca from the Amazone to Russian vodka, purely because it is so closely related to the global world in many ways. Since Rotterdam moves so fast forward, it is important to consciously deal with that while designing. The city is in need of flexible spaces for living and working, since the group of people is evolving so rapidly. Besides that it is important to make people feel at home and comfortable in the city. Since everything is changing so rapidly, it is important to somehow create spaces where people don't feel lost. It would be nice when the harbour moves out even a bit more towards the sea, since it will be possible then to live and work more next to the water (as long as there is container ship activity it is forbidden to build until a certain distance from the water due to risks). This is already happening on the parts of the city that are east from the grey harbour activity on the map.
