Overall land area in Rotterdam is: 319.35km2 and area of water: 205.90 km2. (2012) The harbor has been expanded in recent years and they will continue to expand it, creating more land towards the sea, creating a larger capacity for flows in the future. The harbor plays a very important role in the city. It flows right across and since it's the biggest port in Europe and the most complete port in the world, the amount of traffic is extensive. Almost 2/3 of the amount of food the Netherlands produces, is meant for export. (potatoes, vegetables, fish, cheese, meat) Since we all like a variety of products, a lot of the food that we actually eat is imported from Germany, France, Belgium, Basile, UK. Some of these items are imported over land, but most through water ways. Creating more land and expanding the harbor, would mean a larger harbor and more capacity. Rotterdam is a very international oriented city (166 nationalities), which means there a lot of expats, foreign students, and other foreign workers. (27.836 foreign companies). This resulted in a great flow of people. In addition, housing in Rotterdam is a lot cheaper then in Amsterdam, which resulted in Rotterdam becoming more cozy in a way (more bars, more cafe's, more sandwich shops etc) When it comes to density and 'people flow', balance, like in all things seems to be important. If expats and other foreigners dominate the city, it won't be a liveable city anymore, but just one of dynamics. No more expats will also be a problem, since the city partly thrives on foreign knowledge. The city is getting crowded, so new apartment buildings and houses etc. are being build every year. Important is to not create a certain sprawl (not to be compared with Fenix, Holland is very small) but to integrate areas with the city and creating sustainable and nice communities.
