We have people here that are born and bred and stay all there life so I consider them to be the stocks. Then we have people that move to Sydney from country areas because of lack of work and opportunities in rural areas, they become stock if they can establish a home and job. Migrants and refugees can be stock or flow depending if they settle in the city or move to rural areas. Travellers are flow they move in and out of Sydney on their journey. There are also people that I consider flows they work in Sydney but they don’t live here, travelling up to long distances to get here each morning then leaving again at the end of the workday. Another stock and flow is food. The majority of the food that we eat is produced in our country in rural areas and is transported to Sydney via trucks or train. The food that is imported arrive by ship so it flows into the city and some form stock until used the rest flows to different parts of the country. I see food as a flow not a stock as it doesn’t stay long enough, its either eaten or transported to other areas. The third stock and flow in our city is our business and financial district which forms the hub of the city and where most of the administration is done that runs our state. This is what drives our economy and makes us competitive globally. It is the stock because this has been unchanged for many years. It is also the flow as businesses change constantly and evolve and disperse and new ones open up. The way in which I think the stocks and flows could potentially change is that Sydney and surrounding areas are becoming very expensive to own and rent, more people are moving to outer areas that are quite far from the city. This is creating jobs in these areas because of services and goods needed in these areas. So instead of having most of the people situated very close to Sydney now there are areas that will become mini-cities in the future and they will be sustainable for the people and also business and financial areas. This will help to ease the congestion in Sydney.
