Exercise 2 - Some of Paris's Flows
FC-01x Future Cities (1st Run) - Exercise 2: "Stocks and Flows"

1st flow is water, and it include a high tech system of water distribution and recycling. French water engineering are famous and Paris is there world “vitrine” for city water treatment. The network of station allows now the complete treatment of 12 millions of people consumption, releasing treated water in the seine river. Former mayor of Paris (that become president) Jacque Chirac said when he became mayor that Parisian can swim in the Seine 5 years later, it took 25 years instead, but now you can do it without danger for your body (this doesn’t mean I will, but why not skying?). Here is a photo of one of the latest station, the first that was built in a building (nothing outside). ![saisir une description de l’image ici][1] This flow will probably increase in the future and the water will be more pure when treatment will be ended. Today’s most difficulties are chemical drugs because French people consume too much. But this will be totally eliminated one day. 2nd flow is people. France is still (for how long?) the most visited country in the world but Paris is now the second city (London is 1st). This mean that a lot of people are coming to Paris to visit, knowing that a lot are also coming for business. Many of those flows come true the one of the 2 main airports and the one of the 5 main rail station. Here is a photo of the arrival of an Eurostar in Gare du Nord, that has made a revolution in the transportation in Europe nearly 20 years ago because it was joining two capital of two countries. ![saisir une description de l’image ici][2] This flow will continue to grow slowly as it does today, because Paris is Paris and never mind what you can think of it, a lot of people would like to visit it once in their life. Thus, I think that coming to this city for business is declining because the country is in decline and more eastern modern city have now taken Paris place on this point. So business will still decline while the whole city become a museum open to the world. Last flow I will speak is Food. A lot of food is coming to Paris and never come out, but a lot is also coming out. Knowing that there is very few food industry in Paris that export a significative amount of product, this is due to the location of a market of food (Rungis). French are well known for their love of food, so many products coming from France and from the world find their way true the biggest market in Europe (at least it was few years ago), named Rungis (photo here after). You have to consider that a lot of product are coming to Rungis in the night and goes back to somewhere else in France in the same night. You can find nearly everything produce in France in Rungis, and a lot of product also coming from the world. ![saisir une description de l’image ici][3] In conclusion I found this exercise interesting but hard for a town like the one I leave due to the enormity of the flows we are talking about. I have try to illustrate the flows I think are the most interesting, but I could also have talked about the energy flow. In particular, the electrical one is very interesting, because there is very few central in the area and because EDF (the French national electricity company) has an impressive regulation center to level all the power in France just near, that also allow Paris to continue to shine. Today, the technicians regulate all the power consumed in France from this center and this is also very impressive… But that’s another story. ![saisir une description de l’image ici][4] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1415569808546669.jpg [2]: http:// [3]: http:// [4]: http://
