They present a curious case of being grouped under both the classifications of stocks as well as flows. New Delhi, as the capital of India has a history that is dating back to mythological ages. The city is inhabited with people for a few hundreds of years. Thus, the people can be categorized under stocks. The city of Delhi has the highest number of vehicles registered for any city in India. The sheer numbers and volumes of these vehicles are believed to be outscoring the combined vehicular population of two or three mega cities in India put together. These vehicles are part and parcel of the city of Delhi. Similarly, there are many industries in and around Delhi supporting basic requirements of the people as well large-scale manufacturing units. These industries are firm stocks. On to the flows side. The capital city attracts people from all over the country fulfilling many varied aspirations. It is often said that Delhi is a city of immigrants from the rest of the states. Politicians, litigants, students, industrialists, healthcare seekers and people from every sphere and spectrum socio-economic profile of India throng to the city to fulfil their respective desires and leave the city after their missions are accomplished. It is a classic case of flows. The National capital region of Delhi provides basic and service employment to many who commute to the city from neighboring states even traveling 100-200 kms every day by their vehicles. Since the housing is perceived to be expensive in the capital, they find it convenient to stay at their home town and use vehicles for commuting. So, they represent another case of flows. Finally, the finished products from the industries flow out of Delhi daily to the nooks and corners of India as well as to overseas markets. People are the strength of a nation. Delhi is a magnet that draws the best of the talents from all over India and hence, it is expected that the people will help create a vibrant national capital that will be in the forefront of the nation. The vehicular population is a menace. In fact, the growing number of vehicles became a blessing in disguise prompting the planners and authorities to shift focus on public transportation, including construction and operation of metro rail, buss rapid transit corridor and so on. It is hoped that in the coming days, Delhi will witness a positive change in terms of patronizing public transport more than ever before. The industries which provide basic services and those who have a major role in enhancing economic well-being of the country are expected to flourish in the days to come. Thus, the stocks and flows keep the city vibrant with their dynamic contributions.
