Food - Fishing and agriculture increased by approx. 40% from 2009 to 2013. With the population increasing so rapidly in such a small country research is being carried out into maintaining the biodiversity of the coastline ensure the sustainable integration of coastline developments. The coastal and marine ecosystems are really vital for providing goods and services including food, energy, water, construction materials, recreational opportunities and climate regulation. ![LOCAL FISH][1] We tend to prefer fruits and vegetables from the neighboring countries over the imports from further destinations as they have more flavor and scent. ![FRESH FRUIT][2] Fresh Water - Whilst there are many desalination plants filtering water in Qatar, we drink bottled filtered spring water from Lebanon generally, as we have noticed that the water normally leaves a residue in the kettle. Fuel - Although Qatar has the worlds largest ecological footprint it also plays a large role in supporting global sustainable development by providing the cleanest fossil fuel (natural gas). Mining and quarrying increased by over 50% from 2009 to 2013 and accounts for 40% of the GDP. b. Regulating services Climate control - Shaded streets in the form of old souks are being designed into new developments Flood Regulation - With the little annual rainfall, this year has seen the most rainfall in many years. Flash floods have been a feature this winter though not because of sea or river flooding. Few measures have been taken to prevent floods in the future given that most land is around sea level or near enough. Disease regulation - Qatar is surrounded by water though the water is not used like the major water features of rivers like the Yamuna or Yellow River. Water Purification - Given the location of Qatar, water desalination and purification is a must for drinking and general usage washing etc. Though the cost of purification is high it is necessary given the scarcity of the material. c. Habitat or Supporting services The coastline is under rapid development with services for up market apartments and other such developments. Use of the coastline for recreation primarily, with private hotel beaches and other water sports. There are no major rivers to draw analogies with though the assumptions is that the water body can be treated much the same way and provide the same developments as a river running through a city. d. Cultural services Doha has many landmark spaces for cultural exploration, which include the following - the Museum of Islamic Art designed by I.M PEI which is surrounded by a park on the coastline and offers a getaway over the weekend when there is jazz in the park. ![Museum of Islamic Art][3] Katara which is a modern development based on traditional architecture of running water in channels around the buildings and sail like shading all enhancing the experience of the space and drastically reducing the temperature during the hot months. There are exhibition spaces both permanent and temporary with in-house artists and designers. Spaces also cater for performances with the sea as a backdrop. There are many restaurants and enough promenade space to make the space really relaxing to walk around and enjoy. ![KATARA CULTURAL VILLAGE][4] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14620927408212354.jpg [2]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14620927704359656.jpg [3]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1462092650284347.jpg [4]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14620966228946672.jpg
