To measure the maximum UHI intensity I will measure the difference of the temperature of two different places in the city. One on a hard urban place likes the city center and another one on the outskirts or on a less urbanized area of the city. **2. When (at what time of the day) is the UHI intensity at its maximum?** I would say that the maximum UHI intensity could be measured in the course of three hours before or after the middle of the day, ie, halfway between sunrise and sunset (hours of solar radiation). **3. How should you set-up the sensor?** The sensor should be located away from buildings, reflecting surfaces or anomalous heat sources. The sensor should be mounted about 2 meters about the ground. > **Measurements Data:** > Location > 1. Name of city: **Karlsruhe** >2. Country: **Germany** >3. GPS coordinates >**A: 49.013447, 8.401033 / B: 49.008886, 8.397334** > 4. Description immediate surrounding > **4.1 Location A:** It’s an urban park, surrounded by historic buildings that are between 10 and 15 meters high. The ground is covered by grass > with some pedestrian gravel paths. There are a lot of shadows of trees > that are between 10 and 20 meters high. In the middle of the park > there is a water fountain. > **4.2 Location B:** The second point was taken in the city center, on a road shared by pedestrians, cars and bicycles. In close proximity > there is a small square with some pots with low foliage shrubs. On > both sides of the street the buildings are about 18 to 20 meters high. > The ground of the entire area is covered by asphalt, stones or woven > brick. Sensor > 5. What sensor did you use? A hiking wristwatch > 6. What is the accuracy of the sensor? Not available Measurements > 7. Time of measurements? > 7.1. **Season: Winter** >7.2. **Date: 09.03.2016** > 7.3. **Time A: 2:35 - 45 PM / B: 2:50 - 3:00 PM** > 7.4. **Temperature A: 9 C° / B: 11C°** > 8. Set-up of sensor (See pictures) - 1.5 meters high far away from buildings > **Location A** > > ![A][1] > > **Location B** > > ![B][2] > > 9. Duration of measurements? - **10 minutes** > 10. Weather during measurements > 8.1 Wind speed: Not available > 8.2 Amount of clouds: light cloud cover **What do the measurements mean?** **4. Temperature difference:** **2C°** **5. Can you explain the difference?** a. What influence does the weather have on the UHI magnitude? Existence and height of buildings and constructions Material, texture and color of the materials of streets and buildings Existence of trees and percentage of vegetal coverage b. What influence do the immediate surroundings of the places where the measurements were taken have? It is late winter, but the temperatures are not too high yet The wind was not strong It was a sunny slightly cloudy day **6. Can you elaborate on a number of interventions against the UHI in your city, which are carried out by different actors?** Increase the vegetation covered and the amount of trees to maintain a mild microclimate [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14576200106494415.png [2]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14576201334720686.png
