**1. What are the dominant fossil fuels used in your country?** ![IEA Sankey Diagram - Ecuador][1] Fossil fuels most commonly used in Ecuador are: 1. Production of oil to 28.42 million tons. 2. Import of petroleum products to 13.99 million tons 3. Production of natural gas to 0.58 million tons 4. Biofuel and waste products to 0.56 million tons 5. Import electricity to 0.06 million tons. 6. Other products like solar, tide and wind products, to 0.01 million tons. 7. Hydro products to 0.95 million tons. It is noteworthy that of the 28.42 million tons of oil production the 70% of that production (corresponding to 20.06 million tons) is destined for exports, its means that that energy is not consumed by Ecuador. It notes that the Government of Ecuador from the year 2007 within the National Development Plan raised the Change of Energy and Productive Matrix for the country with social and environmental responsibility. The goal is produce abundant clean energy that does not pollute the environment and ensure the development and promotion of new domestic industries. Eight hydroelectric projects are developed to increase national capacity to 7,873 MW installed. The aim is that the State participates 90% of renewable electricity generation matrix for 2016, increasing that percentage up to 100 % sources. Currently, of the eight hydroelectric projects, three are operating: Manduriacu (100%) with 65 MW, Coca Codo Sinclair (95%) with 1,500 MW and Quijos (45%) with 50 MW power. Similarly, there are projects like Villonaco electric generation wind farm in the province of Loja in the south will generate 16.5 MW through 11 wind turbines. While the use of available hydrocarbon sector will be the most, we are aware that it is a non-renewable and limited resource to be exploited with the greatest environmental care. **1. Where are the dominant fossil fuels mainly used for in your country? (e.g. transport, industry, non-energy use etc.)** ![IEA Sankey Diagram - Ecuador][2] The total final consumption for Ecuador is 11.61 million tons, which are distributed in: Industry, Transportation, Non-energy Uses and Others: 1. Transportation for road transportation only, consumes 5.99 Mtoe entirely from the oil products. 2. Others uses like residential, commerce and public services, agriculture and forestry and other non-specified, consume 2.59 Mtoe from: oil products, natural gas, biofuels and waste and electricity. 3. Industry consumes a total of 2.53 Mtoe from: oil products, biofuels and waste and electricity. 4. Non-energy Uses in industry consumed 0.5 Mtoe only from oil products. As explained above, the data provided by IEA Sankey Diagram (2013) should change with the update to 2015, and should reflect a variation in the balance of energy production and importation as well as the final consumption of it, increasing optimal and sustainable way primary energy sources. **2. It is your task to create a new policy in order to improve the environmental friendly and sustainable sources and consumption of energy of your country. How would you do that? Think of how you can improve the sources and the consumption of energy.** Analyzing the situation from the final energy consumption, which reveals that 61% of oil products were aimed at road, I think this is the percentage that more should be down and the remainder should be re - directed to the industrial development in the country, because it has not been potentiated. Also, the decrease in the percentage of energy consumption in transport should come from the cities and their inhabitants, where should favor the use of public transport over private. I think the biggest step has been taken; the State has laid the first stone in the construction of a fundamental strategy to support the economy and changing energy and productive matrix for the coming years. The goal should be focused on changing consumption patterns in the transport sector, industrial and residential use that is rational and efficient, similarly respecting public policies that are already raised. Certainly all Ecuadorian citizens we met at the gates of a change of government next year, we must demand that these big projects continue over time and political ideology.
