As expected, temperature was significantly higher in city centers than in the rural areas. It is interesting to see how the peak temperatures in some cities are below the lowest ones in my area of residence. **2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area?** My place of residence is Distrito Nacional in the Dominican Republic. The area is mainly urbanized and it is becoming a conurbation with the surroundings cities, which worsen the UHI effect. I made some graphics showing the temperature in urban area and the closest surrounding rural areas. ![UHI effects in DN, DR by VIrna Moneró][1] ![Santo Domingo by Diario Libre][2] ![Santo Domingo by Periódico Hoy][3] The main UHI effects causes in this city are unregulated urbanization and an inefficient transport system. **3. Which are the measures you would propose?** In order to reduce some action into regulating the scale of buildings and the land use should be implemented. In the transport aspect a sustainable system is mandatory in order to reduce the ownership of private cars, mainly used by just a person generating pollution and increasing substantially the temperatures of the urban areas of high circulation. **4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area?** Sadly in this city we lack conscious urban planning. Every day we wake up to trees and parks with dense plant life being reduced in order to make wider avenues for the high vehicular fleet in the city. The city has more than 26% of the country´s vehicular fleet, and only 10 percent of the population.
