The cities are much hotter in the urban areas than in the rural parts. The differences are high as examples: 1. New York is 20 deg. F hotter, 2. New Orleans is 16 deg. F hotter, Memphis is 16 deg. F hotter, Baltimore is 21 deg. F hotter, Cleveland is 21 deg. F hotter, etc... **Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area?** For Podgorica, Montenegro there are no information on this matter, but the UHI is definitely easy to feel during the summer months. The differences in environments are fairly large, due to difference in built structure. The number of trees is actually larger in the city (it is modernist planed city in the 50s and built after that period, the city was heavily damaged during the WW2 and was built almost from scratch afterward) than in the surrounding area which is dry and without much tall vegetation (Mediterranean bushes and rocky ground with flat areas with large dry plains)![Podgorica][1] ![Podgorica environment][2] ![Podgorica environment][3] **Which are the measures you would propose?** The measure that already is made in many cases in Podgorica is the planting a lot of tall trees, and that is something that should be proceeded with. The thing that has not been done at all during these years is to reduce the concrete, steel and glass surfaces on the buildings, and to implement green structures like green walls, roofs, to better insulate the buildings in terms of heat resistance. Also the thing that is lacking in the Podgorica is the walkway along the riverside that can reduce the personal feel of the citizens, and to make a place to cool down during the hot summer periods. **Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area?** Sadly the UHI is recognized for now just by amateurs and regular citizens, but still not by authority and by city planners. Also the amount of people who know how to deal with the problem of UHI is too low to do anything for now.
