New York up to 20 °F hotter than rural areas Miami up to 17 °F hotter than rural areas Los Angeles up to 27 °F hotter than rural areas **2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area?** In Saint Petersburg temperature is usually about 1-3 degrees higher than in near suburbs and significantly higher than in rural areas (e.g. today in Saint Petersburg is -3 at night and +3 during the day, in Kronshtadt it is -4 and +2 and in small village on the north of region – Studenoe, Priozersky District of Leningrad Oblast it is -13 and +2 subsequently). ![Saint Petersburg at night][1] ![Kronshtadt - a view from the gulf of Finland][2] ![Studenoe - photo from the Internet][3] The reasons that contribute to the UHI effect of the city are evident on these photos – its lot of buildings made of concrete and streets with asphalt and almost without trees, rural areas are other way around. **3. Which are the measures you would propose?** I would provide significant increasing of green zones (trees in the streets and parks) and changing in water treatment systems - vegetated swales, constructed wetlands, raingardens etc. instead of pipes to transport runoff water. **4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area?** Actually no. I have never heard about UHI in political discussions, even when green zones are the topic of them, these zones are mostly mentioned as recreation areas and the source of fresh air and not as a solution to UHI. So UHI is not a challenge from the point of view of politicians in Saint Petersburg (and probably Russia in general).
